Former HPU assistant Schuman named Campbell lacrosse coach

Former High Point University women's lacrosse assistant coach Phil Schuman was named the first head coach at Campbell University, it was announced on Tuesday. The Fighting Camels begin women's lacrosse in 2012-13.

"We are very happy for Phil and wish him luck as he builds the Campbell program," said HPU head coach Lyndsey Boswell. "Phil did a great job in the time he was here as an assistant coach. We are looking forward to competing against his team in the Big South two seasons from now."

Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop are all starting women's lacrosse teams for the 2012-13 season. They will join High Point, current Big South members Liberty and Presbyterian as well as associate member Davidson College for the Big South's inaugural women's lacrosse season in the Spring of 2013. The Panthers will compete in the National Lacrosse Conference in 2012.

Schuman joined High Point University last summer after serving as head coach at Div. III Methodist College in 2010-11. Prior to Methodist, Schuman spent two years as an assistant coach of the women's lacrosse team at his alma mater, Washington College in Maryland. He was a goalie for Washington College's men's lacrosse team, graduating in 2007. He earned his master's degree from Washington College in 2010.

"I would like to thank both Lyndsey Boswell and Craig Keilitz at High Point University for their support and guidance," said Schuman. "I couldn't be more excited to work for and learn from Bob Roller at Campbell and alongside the rest of the athletic department at CU."

High Point University begins its 2013 season when it hosts Navy on Feb. 11 at Vert Stadium. The Panthers look to defend their 2011 National Lacrosse Conference title. HPU went 15-4 in its inaugural women's lacrosse season, setting a record for wins by a first-year Div. I program.
